Dolomite filter
Used to raise the pH of acidic water and correct its hardness balance. Particularly useful for stabilising the aggressive water leaving a reverse osmosis unit.
Dolomite is a natural mineral formed where calcium and magnesium occur together in limestone; this filter is also known as a remineralisation filter.
Permeate leaving a reverse osmosis system is aggressive and poor in minerals. As water percolates down through the bed the dolomite dissolves and returns calcium, magnesium and carbonate to the water, raising the pH.
Dolomite filters are manually controlled. Because the bed dissolves over time, fresh mineral is topped up so the filter keeps working.
