Water softening works by retaining the calcium and magnesium ions that cause hardness on a resin. When the resin becomes saturated it is regenerated with brine and the cycle begins again.
It is the most widely used pretreatment stage on boiler feed lines, in cooling systems and ahead of reverse osmosis.
