What should you watch for when choosing an antiscalant?

An antiscalant is chosen from an analysis, not from a catalogue. The two decisive parameters, and why the projection calculation must not be skipped.

The choice rests on the analysis

Designing a membrane system requires a detailed analysis of the raw water that will enter it. The antiscalant selection is the output of that analysis and the projection calculation built on it.

A product chosen without an analysis either falls short, and precipitation begins on the membrane surface, or is stronger than necessary and creates a permanent cost item.

The two priority parameters

The projection calculation weighs the whole analysis; but these two determine the selection more than anything else.

  • Hardness: the risk of scale precipitation from calcium and magnesium
  • Silica: precipitation that is hard to reverse once the saturation limit is approached

The dose is part of the selection

Choosing the right product is not enough on its own; the dose has to be set according to the projection as well. Too little offers no protection, too much raises cost for nothing and in some cases feeds biological growth.

We set the dose during commissioning and review it at periodic inspections against the system’s current data. Determining the appropriate antiscalant is one of the most effective decisions affecting membrane life.
